Disconnected from his high school in Hartford and arrested for the first
time, Tom (not his real name) was headed down the wrong path. Because he
was a minor with no previous criminal record, Tom was assigned to CPA’s
Young Offenders program.
Since entering Young Offenders, Tom transferred to the Diploma Plus
program at the Adult Education School in Hartford where he is able
to earn credits toward his high school diploma. Tom is now performing
at full potential. He
attends class on time, appreciates his teachers and is engaged in
learning. He has participated in Anger Management discussion groups, HIV/AIDS
and Community Court classes, and has quit smoking. He complies with the
nightly 9:00 p.m. curfews, spontaneous drug tests and maintains a job after
school. Most
importantly to Tom, his family is proud of his accomplishments. He
completed an internship tutoring younger students with their homework
after school and has continued the program to have a further impact on
the children. Tom
hopes to use his positive influence to motivate his younger nephews
to succeed.
