Michael’s life had fallen into a pattern of being released from
jail only to be sent back again. He sold narcotics; he was shot once; he
wouldn’t listen to people who tried to tell him what was right. His
family no longer believed he could change. Incarcerated again at age 39
for selling drugs, Michael realized it was “time for a straight path,
because you’re not promised tomorrow.” His participation in
CPA’s Work Release program was the first step to proving to himself
that he could make better decisions in his life.
Program classes in Anger and Aggression Management and Narcotics Anonymous
helped Michael evaluate himself, listen to other people’s problems
and begin working on his own changes. The program helped him stay off
the streets and find employment. A model client, Michael recently achieved
the Work Release Program’s highest accomplishment by advancing to
its top level. He is employed at a gourmet market in Hartford and spends
his spare time reading books at the CPA offices and lending a helping
hand to staff or clients who need it.
