Janette had been a heroin and crack user, out on the streets, homeless,
with a family that didn’t want her around. She paid her dues
in prison and heard about CPA’s Resettlement Program just prior to
her release. When the jail bus dropped her off in Hartford on its early
morning court run, she was homeless again, in a city she’d never
been to, and had no money. Carrying a small plastic bag with her
socks and underclothes, Janette made what she considers to be the best
decision of her life. She asked a man for directions to the YMCA connected
with Resettlement, and walked to the only place she knew of that could
give her shelter, safety and a chance to stay off the street.
Resettlement gave Janette more than a roof over her head, vouchers
for clothes and gift cards for food shopping. Within the first month,
she reached a turning point where she wanted to work the program,
get clean and earn the right to move to the next program level. For the
first time in a long time, Jeanette felt wanted and cared for. Her confidence
rose and she advanced within the program. She has since received awards
for her participation and extraordinary efforts in Resettlement. She
lives in her own apartment and has contacted Habitat for Humanity to buy
her own home. Jeanette will soon embark on another goal: to return to school
for her GED.
