Henry was 60 years old and had been incarcerated for three years. On the
day of his release, he had nowhere to go and no one to take him in. He
left prison carrying two computer books, a sweat suit and a check for twenty
dollars. But Henry had a game plan: find a shelter and look for work.
Winter was coming and Henry knew to stay off the street he needed to get
a job.
An hour after the prison bus dropped him off in Hartford, Henry had already
applied for work at a nearby construction site. He didn’t get the
job, but he did find shelter that day. Every day after that, Henry walked
entire streets, handing out résumés and searching for work.
His big break came when he contacted the state Department of Labor and
they referred him to CPA’s Coalition Employment Services.
Besides providing vouchers for food, work clothes and a much-needed
winter coat, Coalition Employment gave Henry the one gift he wanted
most: transportation. Bus passes meant expanded job opportunities.
Henry’s
assigned caseworker became a trusted friend, helping with his résumé,
job search, and giving him something equally important: positive
reinforcement. Today, Henry is proud to have housing of his own and to
hold a good job as a carver at a restaurant that values his work ethic.
